Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s trip to Eritrea focuses on deepening ties and enhancing security cooperation in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea regions.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is set to visit Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, on Thursday to advance bilateral relations and engage in critical discussions on regional security, according to a statement from Egypt’s presidency. The visit, prompted by an invitation from Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, aims to address both nations’ shared interests in stability and development within the Horn of Africa (HoA) and Red Sea regions.
The agenda for the visit includes fostering cooperation across various sectors, with a particular focus on security and economic partnerships. Discussions will also emphasize the importance of supporting regional development efforts to meet the aspirations of local populations, with a focus on promoting peace and security in these strategically significant areas.
This high-level engagement follows a series of recent diplomatic exchanges between the two countries. In September, President Afwerki hosted Egypt’s General Intelligence Service Chief Abbas Kamel and Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty in Asmara, where they discussed regional stability, particularly in Sudan and Somalia. Both sides agreed on the need for sustained efforts to ensure the unity and sovereignty of these nations while working to resolve ongoing conflicts.
President Sisi and President Afwerki have met on multiple occasions over the past year, including a summit in Cairo in February 2024, where they reiterated their commitment to strengthening ties in economic, commercial, and security sectors. At the regional level, they called for a ceasefire in Gaza and the establishment of a Palestinian state, in line with international agreements. The leaders also expressed concern about the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, urging an end to the violence that has ravaged the country since April 2023.
Additionally, the two presidents have regularly discussed key security issues in the Horn of Africa, Somalia, and the Red Sea, including during a meeting in Riyadh last November. Eritrea’s participation in the Sudan Neighboring States Summit in July 2023 and continued diplomatic engagements reflect a growing alignment between the two nations on critical regional matters.
In their latest talks, both President Sisi and Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh Mohammed reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing coordination aimed at enhancing security and stability across the region. The two countries remain focused on addressing the pressing challenges facing the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, ensuring that their cooperation continues to bolster peace and prosperity in the region.
