EU countries have agreed to jointly back three African candidates and one from Korea for the top job at the World Trade Organization (WTO), with the official decision to be made today, diplomats from three EU countries told Morning Trade.
They are expected to support Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee, Kenya’s Amina Mohamed and Egypt’s Hamid Mamdouh, the diplomats said.
Favorite four: Following days of negotiations supervised by the European Commission, EU countries decided to back all the African and female candidates in the first phase of the elimination process, during which all WTO members have been asked to choose their top four picks.
EU capitals are expected to confirm this decision this morning in a meeting of the Council’s Trade Policy Committee.
